This time of year is especially crucial for the fashion industry. The release of new fall collections is as much of a transformation as the colour changing leaves and surge in pumpkin flavoured coffees. QFIN is proud to release our first fall photoshoot, titled “Thrifted,” featuring our predictions for the must-have styles of the season along with our first interview with our Senior Creative Director, Charlotte Vanderveen. Charlotte answered all the need-to-know questions surrounding how to style not only your wardrobe but also how tips on how to create a fashion shoot.

What is the inspiration behind this shoot and what do you believe is the most critical step in creating a photoshoot?

She responded, “Our inspiration for the shoot was thrifted fashion. We wanted to show people that it can be fun to try out of the box style trends. Thinking outside of the box fashion-wise is super important for thrift shopping in particular as many people struggle with seeing an old clothing piece styled to fit modern trends”. In regards to her photoshoots, “The most important step is planning, and by planning I mean scouring the internet for inspiration. Creating mood boards is essential when designing a photoshoot. Everyone on set, including the models, must understand the vibe of the shoot and what I’m thinking creatively.” Thrifted clothing has become wildly popular in recent months and has inspired many to become more sustainable shoppers. Although this is beneficial, thrift shopping requires time and consideration to have great finds.

What are your strategies when thrift shopping and how do you determine which articles you selected for this shoot?

“My favourite time to go to a thrift store is when I’m not looking for anything in particular. Having an open mind creatively when it comes to thrifted pieces is essential. Pieces that stand out to me are items that I haven't seen before.” Another piece of advice she gave us is “Before I choose an article of clothing I always picture ways of styling it before purchasing.” This is extremely advantageous because it allows her to select pieces that will seamlessly fit into her existing closet.

Charlotte’s style is a focus in many of her shoots. She shared with us her predictions and must-haves for the season and how she integrated them into a thrift-inspired shoot.

“I think we’ll be seeing a lot of muted colours this season—colours such as sage and grey navy blues. Muted colours give off a vintage vibe compared to the light and bright colours we see in the spring. For the upcoming fall season, I think that the vintage fashion aesthetic will come into play for trending colour palettes.” A couple of trends she recommends investing in are an oversized leather jacket as well as a selective colour palette. In her words, “The oversized leather jacket is one of my favourite fall trends. I think everyone should also invest in a monochromatic set this season. This can range from sweatsuits to pants and a matching jacket, but in my opinion, anyone who’s wearing monochromatic clothes seems to look like they have their life together.”
