NYFW: Virtual Edition
With the majority of designers opting for virtual shows and presentations, viewers caught a glimpse of the season’s latest trends from the comfort of their own homes. Here are the top 5 designer favourites from the Fall-Winter 2021 season!
RISE AND SHINE: We took a dive into post-Covid glamour at The Blonds, portraying a futuristic look with a mix between alien-chic and 90’s Thierry Mugler. Christian Siriano turned heads, quite literally, at his socially distanced show, experimenting with metallics, satin and lighting. C+ plus SERIES debuted their FW21 collection from a virtually curated desolate planet, which showcased figure hugging gowns with no lack of sparkle or shine.
EVERYTHING’S BIGGER IN NEW YORK: That’s what they say, right? Extravagance was no stranger to the runway this season. RVNG Couture kicked off the week with a massive collection, including everything from cocktail dresses to MET Gala worthy pieces, and on a stunning runway might I add. Chuks Collins showcased a wide range of unconventional wedding dresses and huge tulle maxi skirts that are sure to make any guest do a double take.
ALL THAT IS OLD IS NEW AGAIN: Nicole Miller welcomed the 70’s back in full force, with a collection in heavy supply of bright colours, fashionable athleisure wear, and the iconic eyeshadow & lip gloss duo. Christian Siriano clearly knew how to get the job done, closing his show with loads of tulle and Coco Rocha in a breathtaking black dress; a clear ode to everything 80’s couture. Bronx and Banco never fails to create pieces for the New York “It Girl,” with their FW21 collection reminiscent of the 90’s Dior archive (a personal favourite!).
AU NATUREL: Designers looked towards nature for more inspiration, tying in sleek, form-fitting pieces with a neutral colour palette. Proenza Schouler set the scene for this season’s most promising trends, including cable knits, halter necks and fringe. Meadow Walker opened the show, followed by new face Ella Emhoff, in a dusty blue trench coat and matching trousers; a Fall-Winter ‘21 season statement colour. Rebecca Minkoff created her own NYC rooftop oasis, with a complementary collection full of animal print and beaded jewelry.
PRINTS, PRINTS & MORE PRINTS: Anna Sui pulled inspiration from Alice in Wonderland, with the season’s hottest new trend on display: stripes. Her choice of whimsical yet sophisticated prints in both top and trouser form showcased her versatility from both a creative and design aspect. Jason Wu, no stranger to colour or pattern, held his show in a vibrant grocery store that played off of his energetic collection. From red striped knits to polka-dotted blouses, Wu really did it all this season.
