The Return of Low-Rise: Miu Miu SS22

If there were only one word to describe the Miu Miu SS22 show, it would be low-rise. The cursed word that no one wants to hear, let alone see, is on display when they buy their next pair of jeans. There’s been speculation about the comeback of low-rise for a couple of years now, but after watching the Miu Miu show, there is no doubt that the prominent trend of the 2000s is back with full force.

Dress shirts, short skirts and khaki were also notable features of this collection, aside from the low-rise. The show started with a strong opening from Alix Bouthers, a Paris Fashion Week favourite. Styled in a sky blue dress shirt, layered knit sweater and a pair of oversized khaki dress pants, this look embodies exactly what this collection is; underdressed European and overdressed American. Another look that stood out was worn by Rianne Van Rompaey, in the same dress shirt and grey cardigan, but in a much shorter fashion. This choice of length drew attention to the raw-edged mini skirt that looks to be cut from a pair of dress pants. This was one of my personal favourites from the collection and one of the most influential for low-rise inspiration.

Look 39 stuck out a bit from the rest of the collection and seemed to emulate the playful side of the Miu Miu brand. The look consisted of a lime green silk dress with hand-embroidered jewels in the shape of flowers, along with shimmery silver socks and black loafers. Although this show was designed for the SS22 season, the long sock and shoe combination will most definitely be evident in the upcoming winter months. By Miu Miu’s account, the skinny strap is here to stay and was the right choice not to take away from this beautifully tailored piece.

Mona Tougaard has been one of my favourite walks from the past few years, bringing elegance and sophistication to every runway she graces. She was fitted in a lime green cropped shirt, layered with a beige knit top and a matching skirt & blazer combo. Miu Miu has stayed with a very neutral colour palette for this collection, adding in pops of colour from time to time. This allows for a more seamless collection and one that can stand the test of time. Some of my favourite collections can be worn no matter what decade you find yourself in, but I do appreciate the ones that can step out of the box and create something a lot more unconventional. It’s also a plus to have something in each look that ties the entire collection together, and for Miuccia, her choice was socks. Mona is also sporting shimmery socks and loafers, a combination that can do no wrong in my books.

In one of the closing looks of the show, Mika Schneider strutted down the runway in a sleeveless champagne coloured silk dress. One of the more noticeable features of this dress is the raw edges along the hem. This was a common theme in the collection and was executed in a way that somehow didn’t make it look unfinished, as most raw edges do. The length of the dress and the absence of sleeves welcome summer weather, and the flower appliques give a glimpse into what may be in the mix for significant trends of summer 2022.

The main takeaways from the Miu Miu SS22 show involve an abundance of khaki, raw hems and the comeback of the infamous low-rise. Love it or hate it, it seems to be here to stay, and I may or may not already be guilty of buying my first pair of low-rise jeans since elementary school.
