Mood Boards for My Favourite Albums
Music has always influenced the fashion industry and vice versa. In creating an album, artists carefully craft a concept to not only fit the overall aesthetic of the project but to cultivate a unique tone that fits with the story and how its told. I like to think of our outfits the same way. Each new song we listen to, or after discovering a new album, we adjust to that taste. I know for a fact that after listening to Billie Eilish, the world was not afraid of indulging in wearing an excessive amount of chains and experimenting with bright colors. In this case, I chose 5 top albums that deliver different styles to match and extent our wardrobes
1. The Divine Feminine by Mac Miller
Modernity and inclusivity reshaped the word feminine as an ever-changing concept in fashion. Miller’s album, tone and pastel graphics integrate divinity with femininity. This album and the designs it complements aspire every women to project a god complex. Miller connects love, loss and desire in a gospel like setting. In this case, for The Devine Feminine, I brought it an abundance of silk dresses, pj’s, skirts of all styles; gold jewelry, possibly paired with any throw on jacket or long coat to encompassed the same statement during the winter.
2. Ctrl by SZA
The confessional theme of Ctrl inspires listeners to embrace their struggles in love, sex, friendship, age, and self-image. SZA goes on an emotional trajectory in Ctrl. To simply put one stylistic measure under one umbrella to define these daily life struggles won’t do this album justice. The green undertones can be a start, but the overall stylistic impact of this album promotes fierce choices to further challenge the notion of “woman enough” in her song Drew Barrymore. Oversized hoodies and Blazers to skin tight dress and green barrettes, paired with a pair of second hand sleek black knee high boots. SZA sings what we all want to say, but cant admit to.
3. Fine line by Harry Styles
We can’t talk about femininity without debunking toxic masculinity. This album had fans shook to their knees, not only because of the melancholic tone, but for every choice of garment Styles chose to represent in his visuals. Over the years, Harry Styles’s voice and impact grew tremendously. With touches from David Bowie and James Brown, Fine Lineinspires a style that is anything but plain. From suspenders and wide legged pants, to over the top patterned suits, pearls and and silk buttoned tops. These albums screams “get out of your comfort zone”. To achieve this look, try thrifting and taking a chance on any pantsuit you lay eyes on. The more layers and jewelry, the better. Raid your grandmother’s closet and you’ll have it.
4. Hive Mind by The Internet
Hip Hop/R&B culture has and continues to dominate the fashion industry immensely. Hive Mind is a testament to having 5 artists find harmony that inspire dnot only by their music and culture, but by their style. This album remind us of the influence Black culture has on artistry, particularly of the impact the 80’s and 90’s hip hop scene carry on today. Hive Mind promotes a vintage, impactful and authentic style without needing to shop at high end street style brands such as Off White and Heron Preston. A graphic shirt or white shirt paired with a colorful cardigan with knee long shorts or kaki cargo pants. Accessories here are necessary, ranging from big shades to a bucket hat.
5. Cavalier Youth By You Me At Six
Another era to take on the fashion industry would be the English Pop/Punk Rock scene. Growing up as part of that scene, Cavalier Youth held a special place in my heart because it represented an unconventional and unique taste in what punk rock can represent in everyday style. This album interconnects the feelings of anger with a sense of freedom. In other words, reconnecting with your youth and what it means to seize the day. Aside from the usual choice of band t-shirts and acid washed jeans, integrating this look has varieties such as including a color, silver jewelry, lace, and a bold red lip.
